It is hot out. Going to be 109 today. My entire goal the last few days has been to get out, get it done, and get back to the AC before 2, when the real heat hits.
One would think after all of my bitching about how busy I have been that all this time at home would mean I was cleaning like a madman. But not so much. I am so lazy.
Last night, I headed out around 7 to see a client. It was still 101 in their city. I decided to go to this running shoe store I had heard about, so I went out in my sweats and a tee shirt.
I had screwed around on the stores website, and was pretty sure what they would tell me when I went in. I was SO wrong.
They gave me tests! I walked across a pad to see which foot I put more pressure on (the left which is no surprise with my knee issue). They checked my arch (medium) and told me I push off of my big toe, which in neither here nor there. And that the weight is pretty evenly distributed between the heel and the ball of the foot, which is good.
Then she made me run on a treadmill and SHE TAPED IT. So, now I am sweating, from the pressure and the fact that it is still 100 degrees outside. She tells me my feet point out a bit and it causes me to roll my ankles inward. And looking at it, I can see how retarded I am. No wonder there is pain. I am running like my feet are not connected right. She did tell me I run the correct way, as far as running on the ball of the foot, not the heel, which is what we learn at bootcamp, so I was happy to know I have retained something!
They have 3 levels of shoes. Minimal support, lots of support, and super mucho support. I started in the lots of support area. I tried on 5 pairs of shoes and with each one I jogged back and forth so she could see my ankle roll. Then we moved to the super mucho support shoes. The first one felt like one of Frankensteins shoes. It was like some ugly teenage boy’s shoe – flat, wide, huge wedges of rubber on the bottom. I was not thrilled, even though I could feel what it was doing.
I then tried on an something with the same support (or close) but a little thinner, a little more shape to the shoe. (Haha. Just read that description – “for the excessive over pronator…NICE). It was good. I think I liked it.
Mind you at no time did I ever see a price tag, but I sort of decided half way through (and this whole process took an hour) that I needed to spend the money if I was going to keep on at Bootcamp. I had not purchased new shoes in over 2 years (how awful is that?) and it was time. And it was time to get the RIGHT SHOES.
THEN! THEN! She brought out some sort of shoe insert that should add EXTRA help to keep my freaking foot straight. I have never used an insert in a shoe. Did you know you take out the inside of the shoe before you put in the new support? I had NO IDEA. So there I am, running up and down the store, with my pants rolled up to my knees, in shoes with inserts…and she is finally happy.
Just to round it out, I buy some capri running pants and leave having spent just over $200. I am wiped. I cannot stop yawning. She has tired me out.
An interesting Tuesday evening, dontcha think?
